Kamil grew up in Jedwabne, a town with a very dark history of non-Jewish Poles murdering their Jewish neighbors. In our conversation, Kamil reveals his reluctance to admit where he was from when he first attended a regional high school and describes his work promoting multicultural awareness.
Kamil wychował się w Jedwabnem, mieście o bardzo mrocznej historii – polscy mieszkańcy wymordowali tam w czasie wojny swoich żydowskich sąsiadów. W rozmowie ze mną Kamil zwierza się z tego, z jaką niechęcią przyznawał się do rodzinnego miasta w szkole średniej, do której wyjechał z Jedwabnego. Opowiada też o swojej pracy nad promowaniem wielokulturowej świadomości u młodych ludzi.
Bio
Kamil Mrozowicz is an activist. He is a PhD student at the Faculty of Philology at the University of Bialystok and a lecturer at the Jan Kochanowski University in Kielce. He deals with issues of anti-Semitism, racism and social exclusion. He cooperates with numerous associations and foundations. He is associated with, among others, Forum for Dialogue, the Rainbow Bialystok Association, and the Jan Karski Society. He currently lives and works in Bialystok, however, he grew up in Jedwabne, and every year lays a stone in memory of the Jedwabne Jews. Since 2020, he has been the coordinator for regional support for the Leaders of Dialogue Program.
Kamil Mrozowicz – animator kultury, aktywista. Jest doktorantem na Wydziale Filologicznym Uniwersytetu w Białymstoku oraz wykładowcą na Uniwersytecie Jana Kochanowskiego w Kielcach. Zajmuje się tematyką antysemityzmu, rasizmu i wykluczenia społecznego. Współpracuje z licznymi stowarzyszeniami i fundacjami. Jest związany m.in. z fundacją Forum Dialogu, Stowarzyszeniem Tęczowy Białystok czy Stowarzyszeniem im. Jana Karskiego. Wychowywał się w Jedwabnem, obecnie mieszka i pracuje w Białymstoku. Od 2020 roku jest koordynatorem regionalnej grupy wsparcia programu Liderów Dialogu w województwie Podlaskim.

“I had this encounter once when we were chatting to friends in the corridor and I said: ‘You have to go in the direction of Jedwabne,’ and this one boy, standing next to me, said out loud in front of everyone, ‘Ah, Jedwabne, that’s where you’re from, where you murdered the Jews?’ And then it kind of dawned on me that maybe something needs to be done about it.”
