Mariusz Sokolowski
Behind the Scenes
Most of Mariusz Sokołowski's remembrance work is connected to the Jews of Wasilków, though he's a school principal in Białystok. Mariusz talked to me about the various ways that he involves students in Jewish remembrance, theatre being one of them. He is keenly aware of Jewish absence in Poland and working diligently to bring back at least the memory of Jewish Poles.
Większość działań Mariusza Sokołowskiego związana jest z Żydami z Wasilkowa, choć jest on również dyrektorem jednej ze szkół podstawowych w Białymstoku. Mariusz opowiedział mi o różnych sposobach angażowania uczniów w pielęgnowanie pamięci o Żydach - jednym z nich jest teatr. Jest bardzo świadomy nieobecności Żydów w Polsce i z wielkim poświęceniem pracuje nad przywracaniem pamięci o polskich Żydach.

Mariusz Sokolowski is the president of the Foundation for Open Education and principal of General Wladyslaw Sikorski Primary School No. 20 in Bialystok. For years, he has been engaged in restoring the memory of the Jews of Bialystok and Wasilków. Mariusz is a resident of Podlasie. Mariusz Sokołowski is the 2023 winner of the POLIN Museum award.
