Behind the Scenes
Jerzy (Jurek) Dębiec describes—in his low key manner—his fascination with the Jewish cemetery in Nowy Żmigród and Jewish history in general, as well as his efforts to preserve it. I will always remember how antsy Jurek was while waiting to start his interview (we first did the interview with Jacek Koszczan). "I need to get to the cemetery," he kept saying. I asked him how often he goes and he said, "Every day." After the interview we drove to the cemetery together and as he was talking about the people buried there he used the phrase, "Nasze Żydzi," or, "Our Jews."
W charakterystyczny dla siebie stonowany sposób, Jurek opisuje swe zauroczenie żydowskim cmentarzem w Nowym Żmigrodzie oraz historią Żydów w ogóle, a także wysiłki, jakie podejmuje w celu zachowania pamięci o Żydach. Na zawsze zapamiętam to, że czekając na swój wywiad (najpierw rozmawiałam z Jackiem Koszczanem) Jurek siedział jak na szpilkach. „Muszę iść na cmentarz”, powtarzał. Kiedy zapytałam jak często tam chodzi, odpowiedział mi: „Codziennie”. Po wywiadzie pojechaliśmy na cmentarz razem. Na miejscu, opowiadając o pochowanych na nim ludziach, używał sformułowania: „Nasi Żydzi”.
Bio
Jerzy Dębiec is the Director of the Żmigród Regional Documentation and History Center. He considers himself a guardian of the Jewish cemetery and the mass graves of the Żmigród Jews who were murdered on July 7, 1942 in Hałbów. Jerzy is president of The Society of Nowy Żmigród Lovers and is the winner of the Marshal of the Podkarpackie Voivodeship award. Jerzy is also the author of historical stories about Żmigród Jews. He has organized holocaust remembrances, exhibitions and lectures and was given an award "For Merit to Polish Culture" by the Ministry of Culture.

And they coexisted, cooperated… So, we cannot escape this history. We should cherish it and pass it on to next generations.”
