Behind the Scenes
I have known Krzysztof Banach since 2015 when he gave a group of mine a tour of the State Museum at Majdanek; we quickly became friends. It was a year or two later when I discovered our shared history. Despite the fact that Krszysztof is not Jewish and I am, both his great-grandfather and my great uncle perished in the Majdanek camp, sharing a similar fate. In our interview we talked about his conversations with his grandparents about pre-war life, his work curating exhibitions at Majdanek and the impetus behind his book about the Lublin ghetto. Krzysztof also shared some of his experiences taking Jewish people to their ancestral towns.
Poznałam Krzysztofa w 2015 roku, kiedy oprowadzał moją grupę z projektu Bridge To Poland po Państwowym Muzeum na Majdanku. Bardzo szybko się zaprzyjaźniliśmy. Rok czy dwa lata później odkryłam łączącą nas historię. Choć Krzysztof nie jest Żydem, zarówno jego pradziadek jak i mój prawujek podzielili ten sam los – obaj zostali zamordowani w obozie na Majdanku. W wywiadzie Krzysztof mówi o swoich rozmowach z dziadkami na temat przedwojennego świata, o pracy kuratora wystaw w Muzeum na Majdanku oraz o tym, co skłoniło go do napisania książki o lubelskim getcie. W trakcie rozmowy Krzysztof dzieli się także swoimi doświadczeniami z wyjazdów, podczas których towarzyszy potomkom polskich Żydów w wyprawach do ich rodzinnych miasteczek.
Bio
Krzysztof Banach is a historian who currently serves as the Director of the Publishing Department at the Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw. From 2012 to 2019 he worked as the head of exhibitions at the State Museum at Majdanek where he was the curator and the author of exhibitions, catalogues and scientific articles on the history of the Holocaust and exhibition methodology. Over the years Krzysztof has helped many people interested in their Jewish ancestry in Poland with genealogy research and guided them to their ancestral towns. Krzysztof was born in Zamość, Poland.
Krzysztof Banach: historyk, kierownik Wydawnictwa Żydowskiego Instytutu Historycznego im. Emanuela Ringelbluma w Warszawie. W latach 2012-2019 kierownik działu Wystawienniczego w Państwowym Muzeum na Majdanku. Kurator oraz autor licznych wystaw i katalogów, a także artykułów naukowych z zakresu, m. in. historii Holokaustu i metodologii wystawiennictwa. Przewodnik i badacz genealogii Żydów.
