Tomek Cebulski's deep understanding of Holocaust remembrance comes in large part from his vast experience meeting survivors and accompanying them both to Auschwitz-Birkenau and to their ancestral towns, as well as from his keen observational powers. One thing I appreciate as the child of a Holocaust survivor, is how Tomek often points out is that the Holocaust is not yet history while it remains trauma for so many living people. He has observed and we talked about, the difference in attitude and reaction between survivors and children of survivors when they visit Poland. I met Tomek in 2013 when I needed a guide for my first Bridge To Poland trip. Our mutual friend Jolanta Ambrosewicz Jacobs told me that Tomek had given my mother a tour of Kraków and that she had said he was great. Given that my mother is a Holocaust survivor, a Holocaust scholar and a very discerning person, that was all the recommendation I needed!

W trakcie wywiadu rozmawiamy o odmiennych nastawieniach i reakcjach, jakie obserwuje u ocalałych i ich dzieci odwiedzających Polskę. Poznałam Tomka w 2013 roku, kiedy szukałam przewodnika na pierwszy wyjazd organizowany przez Bridge To Poland. Nasza wspólna znajoma, Jolanta Ambrosewicz-Jacobs, powiedziała mi, że Tomek oprowadzał po Krakowie moją mamę, która była nim zachwycona. Zważywszy na fakt, że moja matka przeżyła Zagładę, jest badaczką Holokaustu i bardzo spostrzegawczą osobą, nie potrzebowałam już żadnej innej rekomendacji!
Bio
Dr. Tomasz Cebulski is an expert on Auschwitz, a genealogist and a guide. He teaches and writes about the politics of memory and the history of World War II and the Middle East. In 2016, Dr. Cebulski published a book in Polish “Auschwitz after Auschwitz—History, Politics, Memory” in which he describes the contemporary memory construct of the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp. He grew up in Oświęcim and now lives outside of Kraków.
Dr Tomasz Cebulski jest politologiem specjalizującym się w konstrukcie pamięci Auschwitz. Zawodowo realizuje się jako genealog oraz przewodnik po zawiłościach historii i geografii miejsc pamięci. Pisze i uczy o procesie zmiany historii w pamięci i politycznych uwarunkowaniach tego zjawiska w odniesieniu do Drugiej Wojny Światowej i Bliskiego Wschodu. Pochodzi z Oświęcimia, mieszka w Krakowie, uczy na całym świecie. W roku 2016 doktor Cebulski wydał książkę „Auschwitz po Auschwitz: Historia, Polityka, Pamięć” opisując współczesny konstrukt pamięci byłego obozu Auschwitz-Birkenau.
