Karolina and Piotr Jakoweńko's passion for rescuing the memory of the Jews of Będzin is evident by the work they do. This married couple is so in sync that they finish each other's sentences. In our conversation (we were freezing sitting in the former shtibl, or prayer house, with no heat in a Polish January) they recount how they discovered the Cukerman shtibl (prayer house); the creation of their organization, Brama Cukermana and how poverty is the best conservator. They emphasize that Jewish history is everywhere in Będzin and that, because it’s part of Polish history, it is important that they—non-Jews who are there walking those streets today—be the ones doing the remembrance.

W wywiadzie podkreślają, że historia Żydów jest w Będzinie wszechobecna, a że skoro jest częścią historii Polski ważne jest to, aby osobami odpowiedzialnymi za upamiętnianie społeczności żydowskiej byli ludzie nieżydowskiego pochodzenia, żyjący w mieście dzisiaj.
Bios
Karolina Jakoweńko (born 1980) is the founder and president of the Brama Cukermana Foundation. She majored in cultural studies at the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin and is a certified tour guide for the Silesian Region. Karolina completed her post-graduate studies in the Jewish Studies Department at Jagiellonian University in Kraków. She has been certified as an educator by the Yad Vashem Institute in Jerusalem. Since 2016, Karolina has been the director of the Upper Silesian Jews House of Remembrance (Museum in Gliwice).
Karolina Jakoweńko (ur. 1980) jest założycielką i prezeską fundacji Brama Cukermana w Będzinie. Ukończyła kulturoznawstwo na Uniwersytecie Marii Curie-Skłodowskiej w Lublinie. Jest przewodniczką terenową po Województwie Śląskim. Ukończyła studia podyplomowe w Katedrze Judaistyki Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego w Krakowie. Jest dyplomowaną edukatorką Instytutu Yad Vashem w Jerozolimie. Od 2016 roku jest kierowniczką Domu Pamięci Żydów Górnośląskich, oddziału Muzeum w Gliwicach.
Piotr Jakoweńko (born 1980) graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice with a degree in graphic design. Since 2006, he has worked as a freelance graphic designer. In 2015 he became a member of the SENNA architectural group, where he works on the graphic designs of museum exhibitions, including: the Museum in Gliwice, the Jewish Community in Warsaw and the POLIN Museum in Warsaw.
Piotr is an activist of non-governmental organizations and co-founder of the Brama Cukermana Foundation, through which he works to preserve the memory of the Jewish community of Będzin.
Piotr Jakoweńko (ur. 1980) ukończył Akademię Sztuk Pięknych w Katowicach na kierunku projektowania graficznego. Od 2006 roku pracuje jako niezależny projektant w swoim zawodzie. Od 2015 roku jest członkiem kolektywu architektonicznego SENNA, gdzie projektuje wystawy muzealne m.in. dla Muzeum Polin w Warszawie, Muzeum w Gliwicach.
Piotr działa w kilku organizacjach pozarządowych. Jest współzałożycielem i członkiem fundacji Brama Cukermana, gdzie działa na rzecz zachowania i upamiętniania historii Żydów z Będzina.
