When Jarolsław Zatorski was the mayor of Chmielnik, a small town where my great-grandmother Syma Płuciennik was born, he decided that the Jews of the town needed to be remembered. He conceived of an extremely ambitious project: the renovation of the synagogue and creation of a museum within. He called upon Piotr Krawczyk to help him with this mission and it was a labor of love for both of them. I have taken several Bridge To Poland groups to Chmielnik and introduced them to Piotr, whose passion for Jewish remembrance was moving to all. Unfortunately Piotr no longer works at the museum and Zatorski is no longer mayor.
Kiedy Jarosław Zatorski został burmistrzem Chmielnika – małego miasteczka, w którym urodziła się moja prababcia, Syma Płuciennik, postanowił upamiętnić Żydów swojej miejscowości. Stał się pomysłodawcą bardzo ambitnego projektu, w ramach którego odnowiona została tamtejsza synagoga, a w jej wnętrzach otworzono muzeum. O pomoc przy przedsięwzięciu poprosił Piotra Krawczyka, więc efekty projektu są wynikiem pracy, której obaj poświęcili się z wielkim zamiłowaniem. Odwiedziłam Chmielnik z kilkoma grupami w ramach wycieczek organizowanych przez Bridge To Poland i przedstawiłam im Piotra – jego zaangażowanie w pracę nad zachowaniem pamięci o Żydach było dla wszystkich niezwykle wzruszające. Niestety Piotr nie pracuje już w muzeum, a burmistrzem Chmielnika nie jest już Jarosław Zatorski.
Bio
Jarosław Zatorski is the former Mayor of Chmielnik who initiated the Świętokrzyski Sztetl project— the renovation of the Chmielnik synagogue. He is involved in other Jewish remembrance initiatives in other towns.
Piotr Kawczyk was instrumental in several initiatives of remembrance of the Jews of Chmielnik including in the planning of the Świętokrzyski Sztetl where he served as a guide.
