Monika Tarajko

Behind the Scenes

Her mother grew up in Lublin not far from where the Yeshiva used to be, and awareness of Lublin's Jewish past was not something hidden in their family. In addition to being an expert on Jewish cemeteries in Poland, Monika was the principle organizer of the Lubliner Reunion—a gathering of several hundred descendants of Lublin Jews that Brama Grodzka sponsored in 2017.

My mom used to live close to the synagogue on Lubartowska Street in the 50s, and at that time it was very dangerous for people to have connection with Jews, to be Jewish. Even today she asks me sometimes if I’m okay, if I don’t feel any danger around me because I’m so open with this subject.
