Behind the Scenes
I met Krzysztof Czubaszek in his office in Warsaw, though his work involves remembering the Jews of Łuków. I was struck, during our conversation, by his unbending dedication to the remembrance of these people, even in the face of some opposition. In our conversation, Krzysztof shared the numerous projects he has undertaken to remember the Jews of Łuków, as well as his connection to descendants and his feeling that the quest for remembrance is a never-ending one.
Spotkałam się z Krzysztofem w jego warszawskim biurze, choć jego działania związane są z upamiętnianiem Żydów Łukowa. Podczas naszej rozmowy uderzyło mnie jego niezłomne oddanie pracy z pamięcią o społeczności żydowskiej – nawet w obliczu oporu, z jakim się mierzy. Podczas naszej rozmowy, Krzysztof opowiada o niezliczonych projektach, jakie podejmuje, by upamiętnić łukowskich Żydów, a także o swoich osobistych relacjach z ich potomkami i o odczuciu, że praca z pamięcią nigdy się nie kończy.
Bio
Dr. Krzysztof Czubaszek, historian, manager of culture and the author of books and articles, was born in 1974 in Łuków and now lives in Warsaw. In the years 2012-2015 he was the deputy mayor, and from 2017 to 2019 he was the mayor of the central district of Warsaw. He has been active in the remembrance of the Jews of Łuków since 2007, and in 2011 he created the website www.zydzi.lukow.pl, where he publishes materials (texts, photos, documents and films) on the history of the Jews of Łuków.
Dr Krzysztof Czubaszek, historyk, menedżer kultury i autor książek i artykułów, urodził się w 1974 r. w Łukowie, mieszka w Warszawie. W latach 2012-2015 był zastępcą burmistrza, a od 2017 do 2019 r. burmistrzem warszawskiej dzielnicy Śródmieście. Od 2007 r. działa na rzecz pamięci o społeczności żydowskiej Łukowa i okolic. W 2011 r. założył stronę internetową www.zydzi.lukow.pl.

I noticed that there is a blank space—there is no literature, no sources, publications where I could get any information about the local Jewish community. And it was this moment —that was the impulse. I decided that I want to investigate this subject.”
